Overview of hydrologic modeling projects

Project Name: Stormwater Modeling and Master Plan
Client Name: Village of Anmore, BC

Project Objectives:
- Build a hydrologic and hydraulic model of the Village’s stormwater system
- Calibrate the model to flow monitoring data recorded during the wet weather season
- Develop a future scenario model based on the land use information from the Village Official Community plan
- Write a Stormwater Master Plan report that:
- Describes the hydraulic condition of the existing stormwater system
- Describes the physical condition of the existing culverts
- Provides improvement recommendations to accommodate existing and future development
- Provides an integrated plan for future development servicing
Project Results:
- The model showed an acceptable agreement with the measured flows at the four flow monitoring stations
- The future OCP land use information and the estimated hydrology parameters were used to create a future conditions modeling scenario.
- Recommended improvements were sized to convey the flows simulated under the future land use scenario with consideration of impacts from climate change.

Project Name: Swan Creek Drainage Basin Stormwater Modeling and Capacity Analyses
Client Name: District of Saanich, BC

Project Objectives:
- Collect and compile background and field data needed for the preparation of the stormwater model
- Develop a hydrologic and hydraulic model of the Swan Creek Watershed
- Set-up, run, analyze and provide results from the model in accordance with the District’s Stormwater Modeling Standards for existing land-uses and existing infrastructure.
Project Results:
- The model was validated using flood levels measured in the field during heavy rain events. Validation results show that the modeled water levels at the measurement locations are within ±1 m.
- Design storms were simulated to assess the hydraulic capacity of the existing system of piped gravity mains, culverts and watercourses.
- As expected, climate change has a negative impact on the infrastructure hydraulic capacity. The model predicts that under climate change conditions, the number of deficient gravity mains would increase substantially and a marginal increase was demonstrated in watercourses.

Project Name: Stormwater Model Development and Capacity Analysis
Client Name: District of Oak Bay, BC

Project Objectives:
- Develop a reliable, accurate, and user-friendly model of the District’s Orchard/Newport stormwater catchment system;
- Analyze the District’s stormwater network to identify existing and future deficiencies; and
- Identify upgrade recommendations based on existing infrastructure, growth, and development at the OCP planning horizon and the effects of climate change.
Project Results:
- Through comprehensive modeling and analysis of the District’s Orchard/Newport stormwater catchment, GeoAdvice provided an understanding of the existing and future system performance as well as system improvements required to support development.
