Hydraulic Modeling

We will use your hydraulic model as a tool to plan infrastructure improvements, develop operational maintenance strategies, and proactively manage your system.

What is Hydraulic Modeling?

A hydraulic model is a mathematical model of a water/sewer/storm system and is used to analyze the system's hydraulic behaviour. GeoAdvice has extensive experience in the entire suite of hydraulic modeling related services:

Overview of hydraulic modeling projects

Water Distribution System Modeling and Capacity Analysis

Project Name: Water Distribution System Modeling and Capacity Analysis

Client Name: City of Victoria, BC

Water Distribution System Modeling and Capacity Analysis

Project Objectives:

  • Build a water model using InfoWater;
  • Validate system boundary conditions and all major water system components (i.e. CRD supply points, PRV control valves, and Fairfield pump station);
  • Update water and fire flow demands; and
  • Calibrate the model and analyze system capacity.

Project Results:

  • Water system improvement projects were developed and recommended based on the assessment of the City’s water system under future growth conditions. These projects were developed to satisfy the 2038 pressure and fire flow requirements of the City.
  • The proposed system improvements to eliminate the system capacity deficiencies included new pipe loops, pipe upgrades, new PRV stations, and PRV upgrades.

Hydraulic Modeling Support Services

Project Name: Hydraulic Modeling Support Services – Central Park Main 2 (CPM2) New Alignment and Connections Impact Analysis

Client Name: City of Burnaby, BC

Hydraulic Modeling Support Services

Project Objectives:

  • Perform a model update;
  • Conduct a hydraulic impact analysis;
  • Propose water distribution system upgrades; and
  • Complete a reserve capacity analysis at the Metro Vancouver connection points under future scenarios to determine whether there is additional capacity available.

Project Results:

  • Three options for water distribution system upgrades were developed to mitigate the negative impacts of the new CPM2 alignment and connections.

Abbotsford

Project Name: Water Distribution System Hydraulic Capacity and Modeling Analysis of Proposed Developments

Client Name: Clearbrook Waterworks District (CWD), BC

Abbotsford

Project Objectives:

  • Calculate water and fire flow demands;
  • Conduct a hydraulic and fire flow capacity assessment; and
  • Identify potential deficiencies and determine any capacity improvements required by the proposed developments.

Sanitary Sewer System Modeling and Analysis

Project Name: Sanitary Sewer System Modeling and Analysis

Client Name: City of Coquitlam, BC

Sanitary Sewer System Modeling and Analysis

Project Objectives:

  • Develop a reliable, accurate, and user-friendly hydraulic model of the Maillardville sanitary sewer system using InfoSWMM;
  • Analysis of the City’s sanitary sewer network to identify any existing and future deficiencies; and
  • Identify upgrade recommendations based on existing infrastructure, growth, and development up to the full build-out scenario.

Water Distribution Service Hydraulic Water Model Update

Project Name: Water Distribution Service Hydraulic Water Model Update

Client Name: Capital Regional District (CRD), BC

Water Distribution Service Hydraulic Water Model Update

Project Objectives:

  • Update the existing model annually with infrastructure installed since the last update, including new water mains, fire hydrants, pump stations, and pressure control stations.
  • Execute a hydrant testing program to collect data to enable the calibration of the updated model.

Project Results:

  • GIS data as primary source to update the hydraulic model;
  • Demand data updated based on 2020 data from bulk system; and
  • A total of 20 flow test results and 20 SCADA sites used to calibrate the model (steady state and EPS).
